too bad drinking age IS childbearing age...

So now they're saying that even drinking before you get pregnant can harm your baby?

"All women of childbearing age, including teenagers, must be counseled by health workers, educators, and family that drinking any amount of alcohol before or during the chance they may become pregnant is dangerous not only for themselves but for their developing baby..."

Hmmmm...

seems to me this may not be causal, just maybe cofactors in someone who may not care well for their child. 7 or more drinks a week in the 2nd trimester? That's a lot. I would think this woudl be someone who made many bad decisions in child care. Of course there may also be a biochemical cause, but I think this is just the one piece of the puzzle.

True. Doesn't seem like they're necessarily isolating pre-pregnancy drinking from the other factors, either. I just find it a bit scary to see that the reach of Good (or even Not Bad) Mothering is seeping into pre-conception. Folic Acid is one thing, but temperance is quite another. This research seems to concentrate on some fairly lax moms, but it doesn't seem like a huge jump from this one study to a prohibition on the pages of What to Expect When You Might Be Expecting Sometime in The Next Ten Years.
